In the scenic landscapes of Southwest Sumba, Indonesia, a quiet yet transformative movement is happening. Ovin and Markus took the challenge to address the pressing issue of Child, Early, and Forced Marriages in their community.
Ovin, seventeen years old, a senior high school student, recalls the pivotal moment that inspired her to join the campaign.
“When the fun adults from Sumba Cendekia Bestari presented data on child marriage in Indonesia, especially in Southwest Sumba, I was shocked and saddened. It felt personal because many girls my age are forced into marriage, losing their childhood and rights” she shares.

Motivated by empathy, Ovin joined the Agents of Change Team to help victims and learn more about the issue. The SHIFT program from Save the Children and Sumba Cendekia Bestari was instrumental for Ovin to grow. She honed her public speaking skills, learned to design targeted campaigns, and embraced teamwork.
“Now, I have the confidence to discuss child rights and violence prevention with my peers and family. Most importantly, I know how to report incidents of violence against children” she says.
Through her efforts, Ovin’s schoolmates participated in discussions about their rights and the dangers of child marriage. Her action demonstrates how awareness sparks curiosity and dialogue, creating ripples of change within her community.

Markus, eighteen years old, a senior and active member of his school’s student council and marching band, brings a deeply personal perspective. Witnessing child marriage in his community, he felt compelled to be speak out for his peers.
“I believe young people have the power to speak out and support the victims of this practice” Markus asserts.
SHIFT equipped Markus with resources to identify root causes, design engaging campaign materials, and collaborate with creative buddies to ensure culturally sensitive approaches.
“Child marriage is a sensitive topic in our region, so we had to create methods which were safe, engaging, and impactful” he explains.
One of his most memorable experiences was launching their campaign. Using interactive activities like quizzes and puzzle games, his team made learning enjoyable for participants. Markus highlights the positive response from teachers and students alike, some even suggesting expanding topics to include bullying prevention.
Ovin and Markus are determined to continue their advocacy beyond SHIFT. Ovin aspires to be a lifelong Agent of Change, boldly standing for children’s rights wherever she goes. Markus envisions joining a movement for child protection in Southwest Sumba. Their stories are a testament to the power of child and youth-led initiatives. Young leaders like Ovin and Markus are not only addressing critical social issues but also inspiring a new generation to believe in the power of their voices and actions.
